Haiti earthquake update

“Once again, one time too many, our country is a victim of Mother Nature. An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, on Friday 14 August at 8:30 am. Our community is in shock, doing well physically but the damage is still there. The city of Les Cayes, 45 minutes from our community in Chantal, is devastated. Thank you to everyone who has written to us to ask about our communities and friends, thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts. We are alive and well!” Rhodes Jules Garcon, Board Chair of L’Arche Haiti.

We are very grateful that no one from our community of Chantal was injured. However, we know from our experience with the 2010 earthquake that the impact of this new disaster will be felt for years to come.

After 18 months of Covid restrictions and mountain political and economic tensions, Haiti’s fragile infrastructure will struggle to cope with the additional event and costs. The L’Arche International Emergency Fund helps us to respond quickly to support L’Arche communities around the world in times of crisis.
