United Kingdom

The first community in the UK was founded in 1974 in Kent by the sister of Jean Vanier, Therese Vanier. Besides the one in Kent, there are currently seven other UK communities in Bognor Regis, London-Lambeth, Ipswich, Liverpool, Preston, Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Set up in response to the initiative of a local group, a typical community comprises a number of houses and work projects, spread out within an urban setting and run as a unified service. In this way, community members are more easily able to integrate with the wider neighbourhood and thereby develop and maintain important links with individuals and groups outside L’Arche.

All residents are supported through person-centred reviews and care plans to achieve their desired goals and develop their potential, respecting the different rhythm of each person. Some are helped to live a more independent lifestyle; those who are ageing are assisted with more intensive support in retirement programmes requiring special facilities, demonstrating that diminishment can still be a source of new life for the whole group.

Each community member seeks to live in a real home, as a responsible adult, in equal relationship with others.
