South Asia, which comprises four communities in India and one project in Bangladesh, is the youngest zone of the Federation, founded in 2005.  Yet, the first community in Bangalore, in India’s South, was also one of the first communities of the Federation. 

Asha Niketan (Home of Hope), as L’Arche is called in India, was founded in 1970 in Bangalore, followed by L’Arche Kolkata three years later.  L’Arche Chennai was born in 1975, L’Arche Nandi Bazar in 1977.

India was an important milestone for the Federation, as it opened L’Arche to other religions and a completely different cultural and socio-economic context.  The four communities and the project in Bangladesh remain the only communities of the Federation with an interfaith character.
