In Poland there are three communities in Śledziejowice (two houses and a therapy workshop), Poznań (two houses and a therapy project) and in Wrocław (one house). The three communities are home to of 31 persons.
L’Arche in Poland operates as a foundation (Fundacja Arka), which is registered as a non-governmental organization. The first community home was established in Śledziejowice in 1981. Śledziejowice is a village located near Krakow, hometown of Karol Wojtyla. The community functioned quite unobtrusively until the collapse of the communist regime. Since then, it gained in recognition and was eventually accorded (a) legal status in 1990.
The Śledziejowice therapy workshop concentrates on candle-making, icon-making, woodwork, painting and cooking. The workshop provides day(-care) programs for 26 people with intellectual disabilities, including 14 people who live with their own families in villages near Krakow.
In 1994, the second community was opened in Poznań. Currently there are two homes and a small therapy project.
A third community was opened in 2002 in Wrocław. Its house is the home of seven residents and five assistants. Poznań and Wrocław are big cities and L’Arche homes are located just on the outskirts of the two towns.
