In 1978, the first L’Arche Community on the island of Ireland was opened in Kilkenny. Today there are also communities in Cork, Dublin and Belfast.
The two work areas in the Kilkenny community specialise in weaving, card making & printing, candle making, gardening, and growing organic vegetables. The work is chosen for each member with an intellectual disability as best suits his/her needs. Life in the houses at the end of the working day is fairly relaxed, centred on cooking, washing up, and 'being together'. Sometimes there are musical evenings or an outing to the pub. People's birthdays, and the main Christian festivals are important, as is daily prayer.
L’Arche Cork was founded in 1985. Since then, the community has opened four new homes. Today the community consists of about 50 people - this includes 16 people with disabilities and assistants who live in the houses with them, a number of single long-term assistants plus three families, including children, who live in their own homes. L'Arche welcomes and lives diversity of age, faith, ability, culture etc.
L’Arche Dublin is located near the airport in the popular capital city and has many visitors as well as lots of friends in Dublin. The community’s home is wheelchair accessible, which allows for the welcoming of people who have both learning and physical disabilities. The community provides a small therapy project one afternoon a week
The very first L'Arche community in Northern Ireland opened its doors on October 1, 2001 in Belfast. The adventure began in 1996 with people from both traditions coming together in prayer and preparation, anticipation and celebration. In addition to building home and community together, the community regularly gives talks to local churches, women's groups, schools, and anyone else interested in hearing about the sign of hope we desire to live.
Visitors are welcomed in 'The Ember' for a cup of tea and a chat.
