Life in the 28 French L’Arche communities is based on shared everyday life between persons with an intellectual disability and those who assist them. Everyone, whatever their difficulties, hopes, culture or religion is welcomed – with his or her strengths and weaknesses.
The house is at the heart of the community. It is usually, a small house (or a large apartment in the cities) in which a dozen people live together. Two thirds are adults with an intellectual disability. The others are men and women who have made the commitment to live with them for some months or longer.
As in a family, the house is a real home where each person can express their joys and pain. Meals and evenings are important/special moments, as they allow us to meet the other, to make friendships and to, gradually, build mutual relationships.
