Belgium & the Netherlands

The region “L’Arche Belgium and the Netherlands” encompasses seven communities.

The oldest community of the region is the one in Brussels, founded in 1971 by Father Roberti. Situated in the capital of Belgium and Europe, the community has now four houses and a workshop.

The foundation of the first Flemish-speaking community “De Ark Antwerpen” followed quickly in 1974. Three houses and a workshop form the community today.

L’Arche in Bierges, a village about 20 minutes south of Brussels, was founded in the same year. L’Arche in Namur, capital of the region of Wallonia, saw the light in 1976. In 1977, L’Arche moved further South to Aywaille, a small town in the heart of the Belgium Ardennes. The three communities all count two homes and one workshop.

The region had to wait for 14 years for the foundation of another community in Flanders. Since 1993, the community in Moerkerke, close to the town of Bruges, has opened a house and a workshop. A second house has been opened in September 2007.

The youngest community of the region is the community in Gouda, the Netherlands, which was founded in 1994. Two houses are the home of eleven members with an intellectual disability. A therapeutic workshop completes the community’s facilities.
