L'Arche in Africa

L’Arche in Africa is present in the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Quite dispersed in geographical terms, situated in a difficult political and economic context and rooted in different cultures, these four communities slowly build L’Arche in Africa.

The community in Bouaké (Ivory Coast), was the first to open in Africa in 1974. Bouaké was once home to more than half a million people. Today, it is the headquarters of the rebel movement. Due to the resulting instability in the city, L’Arche Bouaké is today taking refuge in Bonoua where they live in safety, waiting to go back as soon as possible.

L’Arche Nongr Massem in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), which was founded in 1977, is a well-established community, with two homes, a school, a small workshop, and a market garden. The community also supports 50 families who have children living with disabilities.

L’Arche Kampala (Uganda), founded in 1990, now has a farm and a candle-making and sewing workshop. There is a great deal of life in this community, which overflows into the city and surroundings. A few months ago, the community opened a second home.

L’Arche Harare (Zimbabwe), created in 1997, is the youngest of the African communities. The community recently bought a second house. The community also owns a school and is trying to develop its market garden.

The communities in Africa don’t benefit from government subsidies. They instead  rely on generous donations and the solidarity of other L’Arche communities.
